FAQsBack To Top

1. What is the difference between plank hardwood and engineered hardwood?
Plank hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood and cut in random lengths. It is installed by gluing or nailing the planks directly to a subfloor. Engineered hardwood is typically a 3/8", ½" or 9/16" piece of hardwood fused with several layers of medium/high density board. It is manufactured as a tongue and groove product and installed as a "floating floor." Engineered hardwood is a great alternative for customers looking for hardwood in sub-grade areas (i.e. basements).
2. What is a floating floor?
A floating floor is installed using a tongue and groove system. The tongue and groove will either click together to form a continuous flooring system, or they can be glued together. The term "floating" refers to the nature of the completed floor system - it is not attached to the subfloor, but rather sits on top of it. This allows for the floor to expand and contract as required based on temperature of the room.
3. Isn't vinyl the same as linoleum?
This is a common misconception among many consumers. They are, in fact, two different products. Vinyl is a synthetic, petroleum-based material, whereas linoleum is made of entirely natural materials. The main ingredient in linoleum flooring is linseed oil. Sears does not carry linoleum flooring.
4. Do I have to remove my existing flooring, or can my new flooring be installed right over top of the old one?
In some cases, the new flooring can be installed over the old flooring. Your sales professional/installer will be able to determine whether or not the new flooring can be installed on top of the old.
