It is the number of 'turns in the coil'
For example if you measure a coil that is a total of 10" high, you could have 5 turns in it or 6 turns in it etc, the more turns you have the more wire that was used in that particular coil to reach the total height of 10" in this example.
Think of a 'slinky' toy .... a slinky is made up of plastic with lots of ' turns'
