I ordered the headboard in the black finish. The finish is not matte but has a slight shine. It was easy to assemble,( extra hardware pieces included) completed it mostly alone- just needed help near the end to finish and stand up. Only con is the height- with the 14 in mattress heights ( have a box spring and mattress), the headboard needs to be another 6 inches taller to show behind your pillows. Pleased with the finished product.

I had been searching for a bookcase type headboard for a while now and finally found the style I wanted in the âVanierâ Queen Bookcase Headboard. Or so I thought.

Although the styling looked like what I wanted in the pictures on the Internet, upon receiving and assembling the headboard I noticed that the âbookshelvesâ were a bit small. So small in fact that I have yet to find one of my books that can actually sit upright on the shelf. My original intention was to buy this item to store my Blue-Rayâs and PS3 games, but the shelves are not high enough for them to sit vertically either. I have had to lay them flat in order to use the shelves for what I intended, a simple fix, but it is still disappointing to have to make do with something I just bought.

The construction of the shelf itself was simple enough. The instructions were relatively easy to follow and all of the necessary parts were included in the box. The headboard is made of particle board and has a small piece of veneer to cover the back that has a hole cut out in case you want to run a cord through for an alarm clock or something (Just not a very tall one or it wonât fit on the shelf). I assembled the headboard myself, even though it suggested that you use 2 people to do the deed, and had no trouble with it.

One of the things I did notice was when I reached the stage where I had to attach the headboard with its accompanying bed frame. While there are holes drilled into the headboard, there are none pre-drilled into the frame, on either end (yes, I looked). This made fastening the two items together difficult for me to do with the four small woodscrews that came in the box. The holes pre-drilled in the headboard are obviously made to accommodate a typical metal bed frame bolt and were too large for the wood screws to fit in properly. Although some metal washers were included the fit was sloppy and not what I was hoping for. This is not going to be a large issue for people who have the tools and know-how to retrofit something like this, but if you are counting on the bed frame and headboard just âsnapping togetherâ, no such luck.

All in all, when the headboard and its sister bed frame are together, they do look really nice, and I plan on keeping them even though I was expecting more from them both (see âVanierâ bed frame review). I would recommend this to people who want a little more storage in their rooms, but if you are looking for a bookshelf or a place to display your DVDâs/Blue-Rayâs/Video Games, this might not be the product for you.

Headboard question - same as before

Again - this question isn't being answered. The question is not does the headboard require a boxspring & mattress - but will it accommodate both? There is a difference. Many have both the boxspring & mattress. So if they already have both - will the headboard & / or frame hold both - or is it a waste to buy either piece. If having both makes the headboard invisible or the frame can't handle the weight of both - this is what the buyer needs to know.

The answer is yes it will as long as the pillows are somewhat flat on the bed, however if you are a fan of lots of pillows- no you can not see the headboard. ( I have a new set- both are 14in in height) This piece is a headboard only and does not come with a frame- that would have to be ordered separately. The headboard came with bolts and washers to attach to a platform bed, but if you have a metal frame and boxspring/mattress you need the bolts that come with the frame.

Hello Tails,

Yes, a foundation or boxspring could be used with a mattress on this bed, however the added height of the foundation (approximately 5-9" depending on your foundation) may obstruct the use of the bookcase headboard.

Is this headboard ( when attached to the base ) deep enough to accommodate both a box spring AND mattress, or is it only deep enough for the mattress?
I was wondering if the mattress set together would be too high against the bookcase.
