Q:Â
We have owned a Sunbeam heated mattress pad for the past several years and I have washed it a couple of times. However, it has virtually lost all its ability to heat up anymore. Could the washing have harmed the electric coils in some way? I'm sure these mattress pads are washable...??

Ah yes, this happened to my mom too just lately and with no receipt, it landed in the garbage. I suspect how it is been washed is the problem. I threw one out myself under the 5 year warranty, now learned to keep all that in a folder for the future ones I buy. All I can say is to use cold water, a lesser time on the washing machine reduced in washing and spinning, plus the dryer is to be set to medium or hang it outside to dry. Also if the heated pad is pulled in anyway the coils or cords can be torn and I know friends who only ended up with one side not working. These things are delicate I find, no matter what price you pay. One thing I did change was to put the heated mattress pad under a mattress pad protector and then the sheet and if that has helped me, it is working with no more problems in the past 5 years since I made that change. Try that. I love my electric pad.
Keep washing them but be there to check the machines. If it's not that dirty, try the gentle cycle and very easy on the soap. I use a spot cleaner by OXY if some stains happen if you (DO NOT) use a protector pad on top.
Hope that helps everyone. Took me years to find this by experience. A defective one is not worth the worry of a fire. My mom threw her's out.
