Not easy to installI purchased this gate today and it took nearly three hours to install! The reason for this is because the hinge supports (as supplied) do not fit onto the hinge. The supports have a circular opening that is notched out on opposite sides of the circle to accommodate the hinge sliding in and down. The notched part of the opening is not wide enough and the hinge would not slip in. This required some ingenuity on my part. Good thing I have a high speed multi tool (Dremel tool). I used it to grind the notches wider. If you purchase this gate be prepared to spend at least an hour widening the openings on the two hinge support brackets. And make sure you have the necessary power tools (and a bench vice) to do it! Otherwise, do not buy this gate. FYI, once installed, it works fine but he install was really difficult. Beware and be forewarned.

Does the JobWe recently installed this gate at the top of the stairs. Took a bit of brain cells and synapses to form before I got it to install with the banister being in the way at first. To get around this obstacle, I put the hinges up loose and then put in the gate hinges before completely tightening the screws.
I found the template feature very helpful in positioning the gate correctly. The gate can swing both ways if you want it to but not at the top of the stairs in which the directions recommend you install the stoppers which stop the gate from opening over the stairs. This gate works well on our small opening at the top of the stairs as it is almost doubled up due to the sliding/expanding feature.

Swinging Gate Feature
I purchased this gate from sears. The picture above and on the box shows a swinging gate, but the hardware we received for the hinges does not allow for the gate to swing open. The hardware for the hinges is different than what is in the picture above (and on the box). The pictures show a round, screw-like hing, and our hardware is more rectangular-shaped and fits in a specific sized hole, and doesn't budge. Am I missing the hardware shown in all the pictures for this gate or am I required to purchase different hardware to allow this gate to swing open? I probably will be just taking this gate back to sears, wondering if others have this same problem also.

How does this gate open?
Hi, my two year old knows how to open most baby gates, I am looking for one that has a more complex opening mechanism..
This gate looks like you squeeze the handle to open it, is there also something else you need to do to unlock it, like push a button or lift it up?
Asked by: Mday
To open the Summer Infant Stylish & Secure⢠Deluxe Wood Stairway Gate, you simply squeeze the handle on the gate and slide the gate out of the latch catches. To close the gate, you squeeze the handle on the gate and slide the gate until the handle engages and locks into the top latch catch.
Thanks for shopping Sears.

If this gate was mounted at the edge of the wall, would it swing open all the way (180 degrees) so that it's not sticking out into the middle of the hallway?

Yes, it opens all the way.

What does the locking mechanism look like? Would it be adaptable for a metal railing?
