After discovering that I'm having sciatic nerve trouble, the Dr told me to get a 'firm' mattress. So, I've learned a lot from great salespeople about mattresses this last week. Among the most helpful was a wonderful woman at Sears Steinbach. She explained that the mattresses middle is what determines if it is firm or soft. In fact some bed samples even had a 'firm' and a 'soft' side. Then, the top of the mattress has different levels of foam and other soft stuff to make it comfortable. Of the firm mattresses I tried, some felt hard like they wouldn't move and others felt like a soft mattress, but my back didn't hurt becasue of the firm construction under the cushion-y top. I loved this bed because the top feels plush with nice soft foam, but there is great firm support underneath... so it's both really. Also there is denser foam in the middle by my back, so even the cushy top will help with supporting me where I need it. The perfect mattress for me. I hope that this helps. Smile!
