This is the second Kenmore Sewing machine that I have gotten for my wife. We find they are well constructed and stand up well. I looked at a lot of Sergers and I kept coming back to this one. It had all the features I was told to look for and others that make it more desirable. It also seems to be better constructed than some of the other models I looked at.

I bought my machine a couple of years ago and have never regretted it. It performs wonderfully, through all kinds of fabrics, many thicknesses of fabrics. The video was quite helpful. The only comment I have is that the video does not mention moving a lever so that you can thread the looper (a girl at my work had to show me).

I have 2 of these sergers as I have a small business and use them every day. I bought the second one because I didn't want to take the time to set it up for rolled edge. I leave one set for rolled edge and the other I use for regular serging. I have had the two machines for at least 15 years. I also bought another brand because these machines don't offer the cover hem stitch which I use a lot in my business. I use the other machine just for cover stitch only. It is a far better machine but I am use to the Kenmore and like using it for the regular things. I highly recomend this serger to everyone who ask and several people have bought it on my word alone and love it.

My sister has had her Kenmore 2-3-4 serger for approximatly 10 years... still using it, still works great.

I purchased my Kenmore 2-3-4 serger in January, user friendly with color guides for thread, easy to thread, great dvd, hardy machine used on many types of fabric. Comes with material backet that catches what the machine cuts, handy box with basic tools very useful, easy to store in material wast backet when done.

Recommend that stores carry the other types of pressure foots ie beading...pleating... guides...for easier purchase versus ordering them on line. Suzanne, Sudbury

This is actually a 2/3/4 thread serger. Very easy to use right out of the box. DVD is very well done. Wish manual was only in one language. Somewhat difficult to find english instructions by times. I have had no problems at all, even doing flatlock on thick fleece. I have always bought Kenmore sewing machines and sergers and will continue to do so.

The 81595 is a 2/3/4 thread serger with differential feed. With the use of a spreader, it allows you to use only 2 threads.
A two thread rolled hem would have less thread in the seam or finish and would be a great finish for finer fabrics such as silks and chiffons. A two thread seam would also be good for lingerie where you don't want a lot of bulk. Another place would be for pintucks. A two thread seam and seam finish would be applicable when you don't want or need bulk and for working with more delicate fabrics.

The 16622 is a 3/4 thread serger with differential feed and it does not allow you to use 2 threads with this model.

The 16622 can do any decorative stitch that requires 3 threads or 4 threads. For example, the 16622 will not allow you to do a 2 thread pintuck stitch but you can do a 3 thread pintuck stitch.

Hello Maple12,

On some serger models, the back of the lower looper was threaded using a looper threader, a long wire with a hook at the end. With this model, the lower looper is threaded through a lower looper guide. This is shown on page 21 of your manual. The lower looper threader is a little round bar that moves up and down. Move the bar to the up position. The lower looper thread guide will now appear almost directly above the guide. It pops in and out as you move the guide up and down. By placing the thread in the thread guide, the thread advances to the back of the lower looper, thus automatically threading the lower looper. All you need to do is to place the thread in the eye of the lower looper as shown in the far right picture.

Sewing with a serger

I received a Kenmore serger, model # 385. 81595 for christmas. I have watched the dvd repeatedly and am learning to use it pretty good. I was under the impression though, that I could use my serger for regular conventional sewing. I haven't been able to find anywhere that says that. If this can be done, could you please explain to me how to do it. :-) It would make life a little simplier in my sewing room.
