I have the 35-lt model and the manual says: "The dehumidifier has a built-in defrost control that senses frost buildup on the evaporator coils. During defrosting, the compressor will automatically turn off; the fan will continue running to defrost the coils."

However, there's a loose sheet that came with the unit which says "Although the unit will dehumidify at temperatures below 65 degrees, there is a potential for frost to develop which may inhibit the unit's efficiency." I presume they are referring to the defrost time during which the compressor shuts off. (65 degrees F = 18.3 Celsius)

That didn't worry me because I don't use a dehumidifier in the winter -- cold air being dry there's no moisture to remove, but should the need arise, I have a small heater down there and could turn it on while I have the dehumidifier on.

They Kenmore Dehumidifiers 25012, 25013 and 25011 will all operate down to 4 degrees C. However, you will note that the water collection rate will be slower as the temperature drops.

automatic timer function?

Hi, I am looking for a dehumidier that does not have to run continiously. I want to set the humidity to a certain level and have it go on only when the humidity level rises beyond that setting. Is this possible on any of the dehumidifers that Sears' sells? What does manual, continous and automatic modes really mean?

Hello monsper,

Models 25012 (offered on this page), 25011 & 25013 all offer humidity control options that allow you to set the humidity to the desired level between 35%-70% relative humidity. The continuous setting is just that - it runs until you shut it off. The auto setting is nice because most consumers are not aware what the optimal relative humidity level in a home should be. Auto setting sets the unit to turn on and off at that optimal level (which happens to be right at 50% RH).
