Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good unit With a water hardiness of 23.09, I called Kenmore for advice as to which unit would serve me best. I also have substantial iron in my water well. I installed a house size water sediment filter, but with my old softener I still had substantial red stains. With the water hardiness data I gave this unit was recommended to me according my water usage. So I decided to take this advice and installed it, which was rather simple and straight forward. It's in use now for almost 3 weeks, the difference is astonishing, water is as soft as it had never been before at a proper level, but what surprised me even more, was the fact that there are absolutely no iron deposits anymore! I have to congratulate Kenmore, job well done! It is simple to program, will adjust itself and will as claimed use way less salt. I'm happy!

using potassium chloride to remove salt (sodium) from water

If sodium chloride is used to remove calcium chloride (and other minerals) from water to soften it, could we use potassium chloride in a softener to remove sodium chloride (salt) from our well water?
Asked by: faheyml
Sodium removal is most commonly achieved through reverse osmosis or distillation. Water softeners are designed to remove calcium and magnesium through the ion exchange process that uses sodium chloride or potassium chloride as a regenerating agent.

The test # was 70 at a sears store.

What is the appropriate Kenmore water softener unit for a 4 person household. Two of us are very salt sensitve with our high blood presure
Asked by: Boots1
We would recommend the UltraSoft 800 sku #75190, and use potassium chloride rather than sodium chloride (salt) to regenerate.

Capacity

We are a family of 5 with 3 bathrooms, a kitchen, a laundry & a garage service. I would like to soften all of the water including both the cold and hot water (except exterior hose bibs). Does this unit have the flow & softening capacity to handle this requirement? Thanks, Curtis
Asked by: cshenher
Hi Curtis, We'd recommend that you have your water tested to determine how hard it is. if it's harder than 30 grains you may consider moving up the UltraSoft 800 model.

softener size?

Our water is tested at: 470 TDS, 40 grain per gal., ph 7.2, no iron. What size/type of softener do we need to buy?
Asked by: reallynotsure
For your water conditions and a family of up to four people we'd recommend the UltraSoft 400 (sku's 75130 and 75230), and also the Kenmore reverse osmosis filtration system (sku 75700) to reduce the high TDS. If you have more than four people in the home we'd recommend moving up to the UltraSoft 800 (sku's 75190 and 75290).

Ultra Clense?

Ultra Clense- Could you explain what this feature is and how it works? Would it replace a sediment filter for a well? Also, I tested my water and it is 350ppm hardness and 2ppm iron. Will this softner be adequate for a 2 person house? Thanks
Asked by:
The Ultra Cleansing feature prevents large sediment particles from entering the home. The filter is rated at 250 microns, and typically it will not replace a sediment filter for a well. This softener will be adequate for a two person household with your hardness reading. Please note that the softener will only remove clear water iron, and that you must adjust the hardness setting higher to compensate for the iron.
