Rated 3 out of 5 by from Actual freezer temperature not displayed (1) Temperature gauge can NOT tell you what the ACTUAL temperature IS in the freezer, but only what you set. This is incredibly annoying, as it requires adding a loose temperature gauge to the freezer in order to monitor what is actually happening with the temperatures. This is very important knowledge, and it defies comprehension that the designer chose to deprive the customer of this vital information. Alarms are no replacement for regular monitoring of the temperature and gaining confidence in the unit's performance. Comparable GE units, for example, can tell you actual temperatures or settings. The unit in fact knows the actual temperature at all times and could have displayed it at ZERO extra cost. (2) I found that -3F or lower needed to be set to get zeroF freezer temp, as measured by a separate temperature gauge of good accuracy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value for the money After 20 years of faithful service from my old Woods 7 cu. ft. chest freezer, I found myself frustrated with having to take almost everything out of the freezer and lay all the items out on the floor to find what I wanted. My annoyance eventually led me to purchase a Kenmore, 16.7 cu. ft. frost-free upright freezer (model 970-187020). Based on the past few weeks of experience with the upright freezer, I offer the following observations. The Sears delivery guys were great and showed up exactly when scheduled. They recommended I give the new unit several hours to equilibrate to ambient room temperature before plugging it in. After turning it on the next morning, it took about three hours to get to the -20C temperature I had specified, after which I transferred the contents from the old chest freezer. I particularly like the temperature display on the outside of the door of this Kenmore upright freezer and the ease with which I can find the frozen items I want. The four adjustable door bins that can be repositioned in various configurations are well designed. The interior layout is good. This is a big convenience improvement over the chest freezer. What I had expected to be a down side to the upright freezer is that it requires a larger volume to hold the same amount as the chest freezer. I would not say the freezer is noisy but it could do with quite a bit more sound-suppression material. Its operation is much more noticeable than the old chest freezer and I would not want it in my kitchen. It is worth noting that this is an Energy Star-qualified unit. I had expected the frost-free feature would take more electricity as it requires a fan which seems to engage frequently. Given that the compressor seems to be active more often than the one on the old chest freezer, I was surprised that it did not take more electricity. My daily electrical consumption in the 34 days prior to delivery of my upright freezer averaged 10.98 kWh compared with an average of 9.97 kWh for the 34 days thereafter (9% lower). Statistically (student's t test) we consumed less electricity with the upright freezer suggesting the larger freezer volume and frost-free feature are not costing us more for their operation. At the sale price I paid for this unit I consider it good value for the money. Overall, I am satisfied with this Kenmore upright freezer and will recommend this model to friends with the caveat that it be relegated to a storage area. I rate this unit a 4 out of 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE IT! This model is a great buy. Quiet enough to be in a baby's room, holds temp easily, upright style is much easier to view contents. Has two big bins for meats, shelves on the door for frozen packages, and two large shelves for holding pizzas, pies, etc. Value for cost is excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cold Comfort! That headline makes it sound like this might be a negative review, but it's not. I Purchased the Kenmore®/MD 16.7 Cu ft Frost Free Upright Freezer about a month ago. I'm 52 and I managed to get it home from the local sears outlet and get it down the basement stairs, unpacked and set up by myself. If you're not in pretty good shape, I wouldn't recommend it. Getting the old freezer up the stairs by myself is something I'm still trying to forget, and so is my shoulder. This freezer is great! I love the digital readout on the door, the light inside and the quick freeze feature. It's only 1.5 cu ft bigger but has tons more room than our old 15 cu ft chest style unit. The door shelves are adjustable and hold all our plastic containers of homemade soup and chili that used to be such a pain in the old freezer. The "pizza shelf" (the plastic shelf with the holes in in) is a neat idea - but it's not very strong so I wouldn't put heavy stuff on it. I like the bin dividers to keep fish, pork, chicken etc. separated. As for the noise the freezer makes - (it has a fan in it for the "frost free" feature - which is a little louder than the one in our refrigerator) - when you are in the room (we have it in our utility room with our washer and dryer) and the fan is running, you can definitely hear it, but it doesn't run all that often, and if you go into the next room (our bedroom is right next to the utility room) you can't hear it at all. About the only regret I have about this purchase is that I didn't do it sooner. It's much bigger, much better and actually uses less energy than our old freezer. Cold Comfort indeed! I'd give it 6 out of 5 stars if I could!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for my elderly parents I decided to purchase this freezer for my elderly parents who needed to get rid of their freezer chest. Upright is much more convenient and easier to organize. Frost free another bonus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great transition from a chest freezer. Many positive features in comparison with other uprights such as glass shelves, adjustable door shelves and door alarm/temp monitor on front of door. Great Kenmore product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the freezer Our chest freezer needed replacing so we decided to try an upright. We are pleased with our choice. Love the height of the shelves - easy to stack or line up boxes neatly. Love how the bottom drawer can easily be removed. Centre basket, however, only comes out half-way, making it difficult to get to food in the back of the basket. Nice to have movable shelves on the door - they work for us but it would have been nice to have deeper shelves. After having a chest freezer which was incredibly hard to keep organized and losing food in it, we are pleased to finally be able to see all our food and organize freezer neatly.

I can't lower the temperature on my upright freezer, model #18702, below -12C. Is this normal. I can raise it to whatever, but I think -12 is too low. My fridge freezer recommends 0. Please answer.

Asked by: Hardtime
Hello Hardtime, The the freezer temperature depends on many factors (ambient temperature, humidity, installation, food load, frost accumulation, customer's habits, etc). At normal conditions the freezer should maintain 2-8F at setting 1. Page 12 of the U&C Guide provides some tips (a troubleshooting guide) that addresses many typical issues. Thank you for shopping at Sears. Have a great day!
