Wish I'd bought one years ago

I love this machine! It got me through the spring flooding here. I have no idea what the other reviewers are doing, but I find that it moves easily and quickly (sometimes too quickly!) over concrete, lino, and carpet. The hose DOES lock onto the vacuum (you can see the little tab in the picture, so I don't believe Sears has eliminated this.) Just make sure you're attaching the right end of the hose to the vacuum body. I have never had the hose, once attached, come off the vacuum.

As for getting the top off: there is a trick to this. Both sides have to come off simultaneously. This means that you grab both sides, pull the outer edges of the 'tabs' and lift. If one side comes up first, the other will be impossible to budge. Re-seat that side, then pull up both again. Finesse is key here: it takes very little force to tilt or pull those outside tabs up. Put your thumbs on the inside of the tabs, and use only your fingertips (like pulling the plastic lid off a jar of coffee). Since I discovered this, removing the lid is a piece of cake.

Avoid!

Good suction... that's all.

Clunky, unwieldy - may as well not even have wheels, as it would be easier to pull without adding their housings to the already Artoo Deetoo girth of this thing.

To make it worse the hoses don't even lock into the cannister, so when the wheels do catch on every obstacle the hose will often detatch.

I suppose another asset might be that the wideness of the body does make it virtually impossible to tip over... (But it can be kicked over if you use sufficient force.)

FRUSTRATING LID LOCKING MECHANISM

whoa betide you if you put the lid on incorrectly and the plastic latches lock. You need a screwdriver to pry the plastic latch mechanism open. Extremely frustrating. Even with a clean filter the vacum has trouble sucking up a fair size nail or screw. Found it to be too bulky for wheeling around a house construction project that was approaching finishing. Would not buy one again. Had an early model and the motor burned out with not a lot of use on it. Replacement motor from Sears was more than the new vacum. So much for the "green" appoach.

Remoiving the top assembly.

I recently bought this machine and am quite pleased with it except for one thing. Trying to get the top off is the most frustrating thing I have ever encountered on a vacuum. Trying to get the tabs off the drum is a real challenge. I will never in my lifetime buy another sears vacuum. Even if I live three more lifetimes I won't but another sears vacuum for that reason.

Pros:Â Durable

Cons:Â very poor latch design.
