Car seat is excellent; stroller is goodI think the car seat is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone. [This form is not letting me choose the "YES, I would recommend this to a friend" option, had to pick no to submit it, but I would recommend it!] It's very easy to use. The nurses at the hospital even commented on it when we were being discharged - they found it easy to use and very safe. What they really liked about it was the orange button at the bottom to easily slacken the straps. They said not every car seat has this feature. It came with a newborn insert that made it very safe and easy to transport a small baby. This car seat would be great for anyone with a preemie or small baby especially.
I find the car seat very easy to insert into the base in the car. It does take 2 hands to remove it (one hand to click in the orange button and another hand to simultaneously lift the seat out) so it is hard to do that while holding anything else but that's probably for the best. It's easy to put the car seat in the base with one hand. The bases themselves are easy to install - I have put them in 4 different cars.
I bought 2 extra bases because we have 2 cars and I thought it would be nice to have an extra one for a grandparent's vehicle. Turns out that you can safely install the car seat without the base, using the seat belt. I haven't had to do this yet because we bought extra bases. I think it was worth it. We frequently have car appointments for our cars so having another base in a grandparents car makes the transition very easy during what is otherwise an annoying chore!
The car seat seems very comfortable for the baby and it comes very highly rated on Consumer Reports. I believe this is their number 1 recommended infant car seat. It has a curved bottom so you can rock your child in the seat while waiting out of the car (very nice feature if you're stuck somewhere). The handle locks into 3 different positions - one for carrying and driving, one for rocking and easily getting the baby in and out, and one for resting somewhere that prevents any rocking. The fabric looks much nicer than in this photo. I really like it. It seems to dry quickly and clean quite well. The straps and buckles are very easy to use. The sun shade perhaps doesn't come down far enough to protect the face totally from rain, but all in all I find it a most excellent car seat and I would recommend it and look forward to using it again.
It is a bit heavy so you won't want to walk very long distances with it.
I am giving the travel system 4 stars overall due to the stroller. I think the stroller is fine but I haven't had the chance to use it very often. Regardless it's quite clear to me that it doesn't have the same level of quality as the car seat. The fabric around the basket at the bottom has already torn (I've used it less than 20 times). As people have mentioned in reviews elsewhere, when the seat is reclined (as I believe it has to be to click the car seat in), it is very hard to get anything into the basket at the bottom. It wouldn't hold much. I think it'll be an okay stroller and I finally have the hang of opening and closing it, but it's too bad with such a high-quality car seat that the stroller doesn't seem to match.
Just a caution as well, I thought we had a fairly large car (Subaru Impreza) but the passenger seat has to be pretty much all the way forward for the seat to fit. We have no problems but I expect people with more compact cars might.
I truly enjoy using this car seat and I feel it provides great value, safety, and comfort. I do wish I had thought harder about whether I actually needed the compatible stroller.
