Excellent quality for point and shoot telephoto shots but also great quality for close up shots. I bought the camera because I often miss wildlife pics with other cameras that I have owned.

Great camera short of a DSLR

Exhaustive reviews of this camera can be found online. I am a mid-level photographer. I know a thing or two about taking pictures, but have simple needs when it comes to a camera. I have graduated from an older 5 Mpixel point and shoot, to this. I can't imagine you'd need more than what this camera offers, short of going to the offerings of a DSLR. Zoom is incredible and stable. Took me about a week to get comfortable with knowing how to get to the feature(s) I knew I wanted for a given shot. There are some bells&whistles I will probably never use (smile detection, blink detection). I regularly shoot in Program mode, and Aperture or Shutter priority mode, but it will go from full manual to full auto. Pretty good weight, but this is no pocket camera. I really like the custom colour settings such as vivid/green/blue/red. CONS: I'm not crazy about the canon-battery pack; would have preferred AA's like the SX20, but I went several days on one charge; just charge up before you head out on a serious photoshoot. No printed manual, just a pdf.

Hello,

The CanonÂ® Powershot 14 MP SX30 IS is what is referred to as a 'hybrid camera'. It is halfway between a SLR and a 'point and shoot'. It has some of the key features of both and is a great crossover camera for those who want to get better shots than a simple 'point and shoot' but without the complexity of an SLR.
