Rated 3 out of 5 by from Slat broke Three days after converting the crib to a double bed one of the slats broke. My 178lb husband sat on the bed and one slat cracked in half. This is not acceptable and I am very disappointed that only after 3 days I have to fix this bed. What can I do to keep this from happening again? As a crib it was easy to assemble. The wood had several cracks in it but not so severe that it caused me to return the crib.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great kit This kit was easy to put together and my child is loving his new big boy bed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not very sturdy. We changed our crib into the double bed in March. In September, one of the side rails broke out of the footboard. We fixed it, and it broke again 2 weeks later. Now we've fixed it again, adding 3 more screws to each corner. If you buy it, be prepared to reinforce it. It was difficult to assemble, with holes not easily lining up, the support rails being too short to screw into place, and just being I sturdy. I'll be shocked if this bed makes it until he's 8. From an aesthetic point of view, I don't like all of the holes that held the bed together as a crib showing on the head and footboard. It would be nice if there was a filler screw or something.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sturdy Bed Very easy to put together and makes for a very sturdy bed. I had doubts about how strong a crib could be, but my two boys jump on it all the time without a wiggle or squeak from the bed. A much better option than buying traditional bed frame to use. *Makes the bed fairly high, my son can barely get on it. May want to get a step stool, too, for the little ones!*

Instead of purchasing this conversion kit, can I just purchase a metal bed frame from Sears to make it into a full size bed? Or will the headboard and footboard not attach? What is the max weight for the conversion kit? Thanks

1. What is the length of the rails? 2. Do you have to use a boxspring? Thx!

Asked by: CalMom77
The rails themselves are 6" x 2.5" x 80.375". If you put plywood over the slats, you can do without a boxspring, but the mattress height would be quite low.

A slat broke after 3 days of use when my husband sat on it. Can we put a piece of plywood under it to distribute the weight? For 3 screws (middle hole of metal bracket) there were no threads in the wood for it to screw into. Will this compromise strength?

Asked by: gopony
Replacement slats are available. Call 1-800-667-4111. Plywood can be used also. The middle holes were designed to be without the screw anchors.

Is a box spring also required when converted to the XL double?

Asked by: MicheeC
I guess it is not required, but highly recommended. The conversion kit includes cross slats. Theoretically you could put plywood base down over the slats, but the mattress height would be quite low.

Are the rails 'hook-on' style?

Asked by: jtipton
No, it bolts on. The holes are already there, so no drilling is required.

What are the dimensions of the mattress needed for the deluxe sleep system conversion. Is it a double or a twin

Asked by: brendan1982
It is a Double Extra long - 53 x 79.5" approx

We unfortunately bought the whole kit from crib to conversion to double xl.  most likely our fault when our baby was born not to put together the double xl bed.  Up to now we have had no problems with the crib, to semi day to day, now we can't do the bed!
