Tips for Refrigerators

Before Buying:

Location of the Refrigerator

The placement of the refrigerator affects the size and style of the model you'll purchase. Measure the dimensions (width, height and depth) of the space it will occupy. You must also measure the width and height of all doorways and hallways the refrigerator will have to pass through on delivery. Be sure to keep a copy of the measurements handy when shopping.

Energy Wise

Don't forget to factor in energy savings when calculating the cost of a new refrigerator. Compare operating costs of similar models by looking at the EnerGuide label on the appliance.

After Buying:

Correct Temperature

To keep food at its freshest, the optimum temperature for the inside of a refrigerator is 38 to 40 degrees F. If the temperature falls too low, delicate foods like lettuce will be ruined. And foods like meats and cheeses are best kept a little colder.

Power Failure

If the power fails in your home, or the appliance malfunctions, keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Depending on the room temperature, food should stay cold for 4 to 6 hours in a refrigerator.

Keeping Food Fresh

To keep fruits and vegetables at their freshest, do not line the crisper bottom with a paper towel. The towel may create extra moisture and shorten the preservation time of food. Keep leafy and soft-skinned fruits or vegetables in separate crispers. Leafy vegetables need higher humidity, while skinned fruits and vegetables do better in lower humidity. Store fruits and vegetables unwashed and in their original packages.

Controlling Odours

Regular cleaning of your refrigerator will eliminate most odours. Check for foods that may have spoiled and throw them out. If odours still remain, use baking soda, ground coffee or activated charcoal (available at most hardware stores) to absorb odours.
