Furniture Care Guide – Upholstery Fabric Cleaning Codes

Knowing how to properly maintain your furniture is important for both protecting your investment and keeping cherished pieces in top shape.

Upholstery Fabric Cleaning Codes

Listed below are among the most common codes that manufacturers provide for upholstery cleaning and care, with accompanying instructions for each code.

S: Spot clean the upholstery fabric with a water-free product, such as a mild water-free solvent or dry cleaning product.

SW: Spot clean with upholstery shampoo, foam from a mild detergent or a mild dry cleaning solvent. Do not saturate with liquid. Pile fabrics may require brushing to restore appearance. Don’t remove cushion covers or arm caps for separate cleaning as this may damage or destroy the backing, cause colour changes and promote shrinking.

W: Clean the upholstery fabric with a water-based detergent such as mild detergent and water mixture or a foam upholstery cleaner.

WS: Clean the upholstery fabric with either a water based or a water-free cleaner, depending on the type of stain. Use a professional furniture cleaning service if the fabric is heavily soiled.

X: This upholstery fabric must be professionally cleaned. Never use any type of upholstery or water-based cleaner on the piece yourself. You should only vacuum and brush upholstery with this designation.

Wool: Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth or a plain paper towel.
