Dryers Buying Guide – FAQ

A dryer is a vital part of your laundry system. Find out what you need to know before you purchase one of these around-the-house helpers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is automatic drying?

An auto dry cycle saves energy and prevents fabrics from being over-dried and damaged. When the laundry is dry, the machine automatically stops. Some models also have a moisture sensor that measures the amount of moisture in clothes and turns the dryer off when the dryness level you selected is reached. It also allows you to pull damp clothes out of a dryer for easy ironing.

How quiet should my dryer be?

When the laundry room is on the main floor, quiet operation is an important feature to consider. Check to see if the model offers a sound reduction package that may include an extra strong frame to reduce noisy vibrations, or vibration-absorbing material.

Can I dry only one item at time?

Drying only one item at a time not only wastes energy, but it can produce inferior drying results. If you're drying only one or two items, toss in a few items of varying size to improve the tumbling action and drying results.

How often should I clean the lint filter?

For best drying results, clean the lint filter after each load.

How do I remove stains from inside the dryer?

A forgotten crayon, ink pen or felt tip marker tucked into a pocket can stain the inside of the dryer. Even the excess dye from new towels or denim jeans can create a problem. If this happens, it's important to remove the stain so that it does not transfer on to fabric.

To remove the stain, clean with one of the following cleaning agents:

  • Spray cleaners such as Fantastik or Formula 409
  • A laundry pretreat product such as Shout or Spray 'n Wash
  • A mildly abrasive cleanser such as Bon Ami or Soft Scrub. Be sure to rub lightly.

Rinse the dryer tumbler with warm water and then add a load of rags or towels on the regular cycle for 20 to 25 minutes. This will remove any excess stain. After completing these steps, it may still be possible to see the stain on the tumbler. However it will not present a problem as long as the above steps are followed.

Should I get a drop-down or a side-opening front door?

A drop-down door can act as a shelf to fold laundry & prevent clean laundry from falling onto the floor; however, it might be easier to remove dry laundry from the drum with a side-opening front door since you can set your laundry basket on the ground in front of the dryer.

Can I get an energy efficient dryer?

There are many ways to ensure you use your dryer efficiently, such as only running full capacity loads or choosing a model with a moisture sensor to ensure your clothes are not over-drying. Unlike washers, dryers have not drastically improved in efficiency over the years.
